IrishTrucksIrish trucks being seized in UK ports

IRHA

Irish lorries are being impounded in west coast UK ports by the government, which claims Irish hauliers are operating illegal cabotage.

A number of Irish companies send unaccompanied trailers to Liverpool, Fishguard, Pembroke and Holyhead, where they are collected by Irish drivers who have stayed overnight near the ports.

The UK government claims the trailers should be collected by British hauliers.

"Irish drivers often take a load across the Irish sea and then stay in Britain to collect more Irish trailers," explained Eoin Gavin, President of the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA).

"It doesn't make sense for them to keep going back and forth when they know they will have more loads for Britain. The stay in the UK also acts as an official break from working hours."

The IRHA is lobbying the Irish government to persuade Westminster to classify the four relevant ports as international, so that existing cabotage rules will not apply.

At the moment, an Irish haulier is allowed to make three journeys in the UK - but any trip involving a UK port is considered one of those three trips.

If the ports were classified as international, they wouldn't count, so collection from, and drop-off at, a port would not be seen as domestic movements.

"Our members do not want to take UK business away. We are only collecting Irish loads which we would be carrying anyway, added Gavin. "We believe the UK government is being protectionist."

RailNew €1.5 Million Dublin Port Rail Spur Gives Further Boost
to Rail Freight Business

Irish Rail Freight
Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar, CEO of Irish Rail Dick Fearn and Derek D'Arcy of IWT "physically" supporting rail freight.

Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar TD marked the opening of a new rail spur in Dublin Port, set to enhance the competitiveness of rail freight for Dublin Port and Iarnród Éireann customers, on 13th July 2011.

The expansion of the rail spur follows a €1.5 million investment made by Dublin Port Company.  The spur is 1.6 kilometres long, and the project took six months to complete.

The new rail spur facilitates access for rail freight to ship side at the Ocean Pier, eliminating the need for loading and unloading on Alexandra Road , and will improve the competitiveness of rail freight to/from Dublin Port.

The first customer of the new facility was IIFA Member IWT (International Warehousing and Transport) and it is expected that the current IWT service will increase from 4 to 5 trains per week in each direction in the coming weeks as a result of this investment.  IWT believe that the service will save up to 5.5million road kilometres every year and will reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 2,750 tonnes.  The increased frequency in the service provides customers with a regular and reliable rail alternative delivering a superior product that will enhance Ireland's contribution to the European Union's modal shift aspirations from road to rail.

The project represents a true public private partnership between Dublin Port Company, Iarnród Éireann and IWT, and it is also open to other Shipping Companies or bulk carriers to avail of this new rail facility in Dublin Port.  Iarnród Éireann will seek new rail freight customers for train load point to point business.

Speaking at the opening, Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar TD said: 'I welcome this important investment by Dublin Port Company in its rail network. It will further enhance the attractiveness of the port as a destination for rail-based freight. The project represents a commitment on the part of Dublin Port Company and Iarnród Éireann to customers who want to move goods by rail'.

Mr. Eamonn O'Reilly, Chief Executive Dublin Port Company added: "This investment by Dublin Port Company underpins the rail freight operation started by IWT in August 2009.  At this stage IWT is operating five round trips per week to Ballina and I am hopeful they will expand their service offerings to other locations around the country.  The co-operation between Dublin Port Company, Iarnród Éireann and IWT shows how private sector and public sector companies can work together.  Dublin Port has always had excellent connections to the national rail network and it is wonderful to see viable commercial container rail freight services linking Dublin to an ever expanding hinterland".

   DHLgoalpostsDHL moves goalposts for UEFA
Europa League Final winners - FC Porto

FC Porto Logo

DHL were at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin recently to collect a set of goalposts for FC Porto.  The club, winners of this year's UEFA Europa League Final at the Aviva Stadium, decided to commemorate the win in a unique way.  They have purchased the goalposts, measuring over seven metres in width and some 2.44m in height, from the end of the ground in which their striker, Falcao, scored his 44th minute winning goal in their victory over fellow Portuguese side Braga. The goalposts will feature in a new museum currently being developed by Porto.

DHL Global Forwarding moved the goalposts from Dublin, Ireland to Portugal on a direct truck.

Cian Nihill of the Irish Times reported that the fee for the post was an "undisclosed amount" although was later verified as being in the "not very much to be honest" ball park, roughly about the cost of a regular set of goalposts.

FC Porto achieved a 1 - 0 victory over Braga in the final and as no goal was scored in the second half of the match, the opposite set of goal posts will remain in Dublin.
