Irish International Freight Association
celebrates 50 years in 2012, Caoga bliain ag fas
The pages of the brown coloured official Minute Book of the 'Irish Association of Shipping and Forwarding Agents' reads in beautiful copper plate handwriting; "The inaugural meeting of the Irish Association of Shipping and Forwarding Agents was held in Jurys Hotel on Wednesday March 14th 1962 at 7pm. Those present were R. Whelan, B. Timlin, P. Pim. C.Coyne. E. Robson. A. Archer. T.A. Jones, A.P. Coffey, M. Forde, J. Mac Bride, P. Taylor . M. Horgan. T. Foley. Mr. A.E. Timlin was in the chair and opened the meeting by outlining the purpose of the meeting, which was to consider the Draft Constitution." Thus, was the present Irish International Freight Association brought into existence fifty years ago. In those early meetings issues such as the delays in having goods picked up at the docks (North Wall Extension 1965 "Checkers and Head Checkers not being available"), opening charges, commissions from shipping lines and tallying charges were some of the subjects of discussion. Two years later, at a meeting on 24th March 1964 it was decided that "as and from the 1st of May the following minimum scale charges should apply: - £1.2.6d Per Entry". In addition there should be a minimum charge of 7/6d (Agency or dock attendance) .... Finally it was resolved that the Agency charge for releasing consignments should be as follows: 10/- where such release is given to non-members or the association 7/6 - in the case of release to members Just some of the many interesting pieces of information that reflect a world far removed from our current digital age. We would welcome ideas and suggestions from members as to how this event should be celebrated next year and we look forward to hearing from you. E-mail to iifa@eircom.net

All Ireland Freight Forum - Belfast November 7th 2011
At the All Ireland Freight Forum held in Belfast on Monday 7th of November 2011 a number of points were raised by IRHA representative Mr.George Mills which he suggested should be addressed and which would lead to harmonization on an "All Island" basis for the "mutual benefit of both parts".
1. The disparity in weight limits between North and South of the border means that for a haulier based in North Donegal it must abide by UK limits as daily transit of NI is necessary to get to Dublin.
2. The application of Cabotage in the UK has meant the impounding of Irish trucks in Wales as they have been deemed to be in breach of the rules. This, although meant to protect UK haulier interests, is forcing Irish firms to "re-flag" to the UK and consequently legitimizing UK internal activities by Irish haulage firms. This in effect is an "own goal" by VOSA.
3. On the other hand and in the other Island, the Republic of Ireland authorities still have not got around to introducing cabotage rules and consequently NI trucks are free to travel to Dublin Port and "pick up and drop all the trailers they want."
4. The IRHA has put forward the notion to the Department of Finance of recognition of the difference between the essential user of fuel and the discretionary user.
According to the calculations of the IRHA its plan would save E150 million annually by introducing a one color of diesel only and the working of a graduated rebate system for hauliers ( who would have to be tax compliant and licensed ), farmers and the fishing industry. The savings would be made by eliminating "tank-tourism" to other European countries and eliminating the laundering of M.G.O. at the same time.
Mr. Mills contends that "The situation at the moment is undermining the whole industry as there is not a level playing field out there."

IIFA Standard Trading Conditions - an effective defense
IIFA Standard Trading Conditions & the Importance of Incorporation The IIFA Standard Trading Conditions were recently tested in a Circuit Court case.
One of benefits of IIFA membership is the entitlement to use the Irish International Freight Association Standard Trading Conditions (IIFA Conditions").1 This was recently emphasized in a Circuit Court case which was successfully defended by an IIFA member. The Judgment is pleasing as it confirmed the validity of an exclusion clause within the IIFA Conditions, and, it also emphasized the importance of ensuring valid incorporation of the IIFA Conditions in contracts.
Hugh Kennedy of Lavelle Coleman solicitors, who acted on behalf of the successful IIFA member, will discuss the issues in a webinar which IIFA is setting up in January.
We will notify full trading member representativesof the details nearer the date.
