2nd April 2025 Young Logistics Professionals Event at Dublin Port

Wednesday 2nd April 2025 saw Employees of IIFA Member business have opportunity to view Dublin Port from a unique angle, via the St. Brigid’s Boat as part of the 3rd Annual Logistics and Supply-Chain Skills week. Delivered across Monday 31st March – Saturday 5th April 2025, this week long event saw activities take place across the country to promote careers in Freight Forwarding and the wider Irish Supply-Chain industry.

IIFA’s contribution to Logistics and Supply-Chain Skills week was an event focused on Young Logistics Professionals and the career paths ahead of them. The event began at Dublin Port itself, moved to the seas and the road for an up-close look at Port operations and finished with an afternoon of career and skills-based presentations.

Commencing their day at the Substation of Dublin Port, Cormac Kennedy, Head of Commercial at Dublin Port, delivered a presentation outlining the Port’s development and expansion plans to 2040. The group then moved to board the St. Brigid’s Boat where Harbour Master Michael McKenna spoke of the functioning of and history surrounding Dublin Port, while Members viewed the daily working of Port infrastructure from the sea. When back on land, IIFA Members Doyle Shipping Group guided the group via Bus around one of DSG’s container yards, showing the journey of a Haulier’s journey through the Port to collect a Container.

As the event was aimed toward Young Logistics Professionals, the afternoon section focused on  Career presentations from IIFA Members. Freight Forwarding as a career can facilitate many different paths and specialist skillsets and the presentations gave insight into how career journeys can develop and most fittingly, what skillsets/ education undertakings can aid those journeys over the years. Speaking at the event were:

  • Pearl Cumiskey, Director, Account Management, Europe at Expeditors Ltd
  • Carl Coates, ICT Business Relationship Manager at Rosslare Europort & Rail Freight
  • Gary Morrissey, Head of Air Freight, Region West at DB Schenker Ltd

Each Speaker delivered an insightful intake into their career development across the years and featured many helpful and host tips for the audience of Young Logistics Professionals. Finally, Sean Canney, Minister of State at the Department of Transport with responsibility for International and road transport, logistics, rail and ports closed the event with a short speech to show appreciation for the work of the Irish Freight Forwarding and Logistics industry.

Within IIFA, we are appreciative of the combined efforts of Dublin Port and Doyle Shipping Group for facilitating the tour sections of this event and to the Department of Transport for enabling IIFA to include this event as part of the National 2025 Logistics & Supply-Chain Skills week. The Association is also grateful to Carl, Gary and Pearl for their time and presentations to the audience at the event.

Irish International Freight Association are committed to promoting Freight Forwarding as a career path of choice and will continue its work with the Department of Transport’s Logistics & Supply-Chain Skills Working Group.
